Tab Collection

Ellie was admitted at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for her entire ten weeks of life as she bravely fought for each day. Karl and Kim stayed at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House during that time and were so grateful for the accommodations and wonderful services PRMH offered.

We now participate in Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region’s tab collection program that raises funds to help support families with seriously ill children. Since 2018, we have collected over 380 pounds of tabs and we continue to participate with an annual drop-off.

We also regularly donate items to the house, such as snacks and gift cards for hosted families, and had dedicated a memorial brick with funds going to the house’s 2019 expansion.

Why tabs?

The tab collection program began at Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House in 1997. Since the inception of the program, RMHC Philly has collected over 200 tons of tabs and over $170,000. Why just the tabs? They are easier to store and there is also a higher concentration of aluminum in the tab itself. Once collected, RMHC Philly takes them to United Scrap Metal and there the donation is weighed to determine their value. Based on $0.75 per pound, United Scrap Metal will send a check for the total amount so those little tabs can really add up!
